My father was a daily rated mechanic earn barely enough to feed the five of us. Mother was a housewife. Sometimes we will just go to our uncle or aunty's house for meals.
Aunty stays in Jalan Mata Ayer, I love those days where we (brothers and sister) are so care free. Travelling all the way to her place to stay for the weekend is simply luxury. THe bus journey will take an hour or so. My elder sister and myself will just appear infront of her house without invitation. No telephone during those days.
The agony before reaching her place is to face those stray dogs (Seow Kau). Always have to hold some stones and stick to fence them off.
Two cousins were elated when ever they see us. Uncle will prepare feast for me and my jie jie (June). Those days the chicken, ducks and even pigs were their source of living.
Climbing up rambutans tree, bathing beside the well (naked) - Jie was not with us lah. The kicking of ball in the big compound. The fishing by the pond, the sounds of the creepy crawlers at night, the sound of the rooster in the morning and yes going to the "toa long kaw" (Monsoon drain) to catch fish. I remember once I follow my uncle going house to house to collect left overs for the Pigs. By the end of the weekend, Uncle, Aunty, both cousins with me and Jie will squeeze into Uncle car "Morris" as he will send us home - So nice to recall those moment.
We have joy, we have fun, we have season in the sun.

Drive pass river Valley road after dropping my wife off her office near River Valley.
Surely it bring some memories as I was driving towards Kallang for my Favourite Prawn Mee.
The National Theatre was long gone, The Van Kleff Aquarium followed and ... surprisingly former River Valley River Pool.
I remember having paid 20 cents for entry to the pool and another 20 cent to rent a swimming trunk. Having my first "drink" of the pool water - cough cough. The Life guard will blow the whistle to ask out to get out of the pool - time's up.
As I was driving along Victoria Street approaching Jalan Sultan ... I look at the left side of "Once a upon a time" where I stayed during my childhoods days. The many friends that I have during my growing up years. The Backlane where we play our football. We use the wooden box that use to contain the water bottles to be our goal post where the ball hit the box and a "Must" for the box to drop the it is consider a goal. The Kopi Towkay will always curse and swear on a monday morning when he found that many wooden crates were inside the drain. We were very playful and naughty.
Had my Bowl of "Prawn Mee". Talk to my ChildHood friend - the Son of the Prawn Mee Stall Owner. Chit Chat and realize that we are reaching the BIG "5" soon.
Time approaching eight .... quick must beat the ERP time ....

Good read...i didn't go to river valley in my days as i stay in Kampong Ah Hoon most of my early childhood...i onli climb trees and visit to TTSH compound during the early 70's....
