The common meaning in golf for getting up and down means that a golfer missed his greens in regulations but still managed to make par. Usually when he or she makes a mistake and hits into a greenside bunker. So a 3-on 1-putt on a par 4 meant that the golfer got up and down.

Other meanings for up and down could mean anything! LOL
