| Thank You So Much Ms RP, I am just being kay poh... No intention to go for any golfing lesson, not that I don't need it...but just that golf for me now is just a recreation activity...meeting 'nice' n 'fun' fellow golfers and just enjoy the game, company and good food if we play in JB. But you never know...maybe suddenly I have the urge and inspiration to play better golf..anyway, if your coaching friend is based in Mandai ECG range...I know most of them! Just curious to know..Is there such thing as a 'True Teacher' you mean the rest are Untrue...ha ha( just kidding) | |

Just curious to know..Is there such thing as a 'True Teacher' you mean the rest are Untrue...ha ha( just kidding) Hey VR, it's our right to be kay poh you're right...golf is a recreation which brings people together to share and have fun To me a True Teacher is someone who has my interest as a golfer in mind, not just making money from me but understanding my abilities/limitations/potentials and guide/lead me to have confidence in myself and my game. A True Teacher is able to communicate effectively, by this I mean translate his/her instructions into the simplest form so that I can understand and execute the swing/move to the best of my ability. For eg. I once went to my pro for a session to work on my driver, I ended up being told ....this is wrong, that's not good, that needs fixing...in the end we never did work on my driver I end feeling worse about my game I felt I didn't get my money's worth!

| Wow.. Ms RP, Your description and expectation of a 'True' teacher is both very impressive and realistic...so I presume this pro friend of yours has all the attributes that you mention.. I look forward to the pleasure of meeting up with him/her one day...if talk talk with this pro must pay money or not.. | |

| Hi markie, yes I've been thru a few coaches and found that it dosen't matter if they're local or foreign, the most important factor (in my opinion) is the personality, chemistry and communication of both the teacher and student. A good teacher need not know how to play/score well, they need to know how to teach effectively. I once asked a friend what he thinks of a certain pro, his reply was if I wanted a good pro, look for a touring pro instead of a teaching pro. He was right! I would like to know your take as well, if you don't mind sharing | |

I would like to know your take as well, if you don't mind sharing Hello Ms RP..I am a self taught golfer..so may not be appropriate to put my view on the above..however I feel that whether they are local or foreign, black or white coach...it does not matter..neither are they SPGA,USTA or USPGA certified, most importantly as you mentioned they must be able to teach effectively..well sometime cost is also a consideration for many of us. You mentioned that a good teacher need not know how to play/score well..but if a coach can't play well..I am quite doubtful that he will be able to demostrate effectively on the golf swing etc.. Your view on preference for Touring pro over Teaching pro may be subjective...Not all ex touring pro are able to impart their knowlege even they were very sucessful during their playing career.. Likewise not all great soccer players are great coach as well

Hi VR, it's great to know that you're a self-taught golfer, not many ppl can do that Cost will always be a concern unless you have a lot of disposable $$$ It would be a bonus if a good teacher can play and score well, but not always necessary, as the golf swing is a series of movements, well co-ordinated and synchronized. To me a teacher should be able to translate these of movements into words that learners can understand and in turn execute. (Mind you, some ppl learn well by emulating/copying which is one of the many ways of learning) For me, there's no right or wrong swing in golf, it's what works for each of us an example would be Jim Fyruk, he has what the pro's classified as unorthodox swing, there's many others too esp on the Champions Tour. Yes, you're right that not all x-touring pros can be good teachers. At the end of the day, each of us will have to/want to find a pro who can give us the answer to playing better/scoring better....me included I'm very happy that I've finally found a golf pro whom believed in me and who I trust and respect deeply Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts

| Hi RP and VR, to be honest I have been to almost 10 coaches. USGTF, SPGA, Australia PGA, local, foreign, teaching, touring blah blah blah.....I have tried them all. Some of them are just for 1 lessons and some of them are a series of 6 to 10 lessons......but I have gone back to neither of them except my current pro.
In my opinion, foreign pro are usually better because they go thru more training to get certified as compared to local pro. Also I'm of the opinion that a good pro need to have a good pair of eyes......able to spot your mistake easily
He or she must then be able to explain the mistake to you and tell you what you need to do to correct the mistake and not just blindly follow
I agree with VR that a good pro must be able to play well.....not to tournament standard but must at least be able to break 80 easily.....do not be surprise that many teaching pro cannot really break 80
A good pro must design a training objectives or program for the student, track their progress, scold them if need to etc etc......actually I have many things to say but I am just lazy to type
But if u have any queries, I will try my best to answer Note: just my opinion only
Oh 1 more thing, regardless of how good the pro is, if you dun put in effort to practice at least once a week, then its no use. You are then just paying the pro to watch you hit balls.

Now I know why Mark Ko play so well..shaolin, wutan, wing chun, muay thai, kickboxing, taekwando, judo, boxing..all you know...Swee... The last statement is exactly what my current coach told me before the start of the coaching- "if you don't put in the effort to train and play, I'll never be your miracle..." [i]
