| Player's A ball landed on Airforce 7th green side groove, he take a relief to place his ball within 6 inches and not nearer to the pin. However, he placed his ball within the groove perimeter on the fringe surface not nearer to the pin, is this correct? Player B told him that he had improved the lie, the correct placement should be behind the groove line on the primary rough. Who's correct?

| First of all, does the local rule state that players are allowed to place the ball when it is resting on the groove? If not, then the player has to play as it lies. If it is allowed, then the player has to place the ball on the fringe and must not be nearer to the hole than its original position. | |

So you agree with player A or B?

Hi there. There is a local rule on back of NSRCC scorecards that provides relief for this situation. It is quite common to see players having different interpretations on relief procedures for such situations. It is a mis-conception on this "6 inch" rule, which, in fact, does not exist. When relief is granted for greenside edging grooves, it is given under Rule 25-1 (Abnormal Ground Conditions), and specifically 25-1b(iii). Simply put, when taking relief, the player must place the ball at the nearest point of relief that is not nearer the hole. In this case, I believe the ball should be placed directly behind where it originally laid, and off the groove. Unless the area to be placed happens to be GUR, then it may be possible that the nearest point of relief is 6 inches away as you've described. From your narration, player A has breached this rule, and the penalty is 2 strokes in stroke play and loss of hole in match play. Trust this would help.

Trust this would help. Thanks kp for clarification. Its just a post game discussion, as we find this situation very interesting
