Session 1 - Etiquette and Courtesy on or around the Green Empty
PostSubject: Session 1 - Etiquette and Courtesy on or around the Green   Session 1 - Etiquette and Courtesy on or around the Green EmptyThu May 17, 2012 5:02 am

I will start this session of what comprises good etiquette and courtesy starting from "on the green" from my personal experience and understanding playing with golf kakis and work backwards to the Tee Box. Feel free to add and comment if I missed out anything. These are unwritten rules in our quest to play "good golf", although the definition of "good golf" varies from each individual. So here goes:

1. The golfer whose ball is nearest the flag shall attend to the flag.

2. The golfer who hole out first shall attend to the flag and shall be responsible for putting the flag back in the hole after all golfers have completed their putt.

3. Play ready golf, meaning, if a golfer is seen struggling with his chipping and subsequently put his shot on the green but furthest away from the flag shall be allow to "take a rest" to catch his breath while other kakis shall proceed with the putting regardless of whether their ball is nearer the hole than the "struggling golfer".

4. The golfer who is seen to be struggling on the sand bunker after hitting multiple shots to get the ball on the green and still is unable to get it on the green, shall be given relieve and allow to place his ball on either the fairway, fringe or green (without penalty) whichever he chooses.

5. Help the golfer who is seen to be struggling on the sand bunker rake the sand once he get his ball out of the sand.

6. It is considered discourteous if a golfer putt out of turn if the other golfer whose ball is further away and ready to putt than the one about to part.

7. Always carry a spare marker and mark for the golfer whose ball is furthest from hole and had just putted in order to speed up play, if the pace is already a slow.

8. Never cast your shadow over the golfer who is about to putt. Try hitting his shadow in mocking fashion to get it out of the way. He will get the message.

9. Never stand in front or behind the line of putt to avoid unnecessary distraction to the golfer who is about to putt.

10. Never place the flag in the line of putt of any golfer's ball behind the hole.

11. If golfer A's ball is on the fringe and furthest from hole, and golfer B, whose ball is nearest the flag, shall attend to the flag and ask the golfer A whether he want the flag in or out. He should not make assumptions.

12. The buggy mate shall assist the golfer bring his putter (if he did not carry it with him) whose ball is on the fairway and is about to play the shot towards the green.

13. It is considered inconsiderate if a golfer uses a tee (considered a distraction) to mark his ball, especially if his ball is in the line of the putt of the golfer who is about to putt.

14. If golfer A whose ball is on the green and may be in the line of the golfer B whose ball is on the fringe or fairway nearest the green, golfer A should ask the golfer B if he want the ball marked before taking the shot.

15. The golfer standing nearest the hole shall help the golfer retrieve the ball if he has made the putt or is given a "
gimme".

16. Repair pitch-marks

17. Repair spike-marks (after play of hole - to avoid breaking rules)

18. Don't talk while others are putting

19. Don't move if one is in the vision range of the player who is about to putt

20. Stay on or very near the green until the last player has holed out

21. Always ask for permission e.g "May i finish/take?"

22. If you are near green and your flight mate is taking his/her approach shot, watch for their ball in case of any wayward shot so that you can help them locate/find their ball while they make their way to the green in order to speed up play.

23. Don't step on lines of putt - if not sure, ask your flight mates for the position of their ball markers

24. If walking to one's ball, do walk behind the player who is studying his/her putting line/approach line

Golf is not a difficult game at all bro. To me it's a game of common sense, asking of us to be more tolerant (which can be quite difficult sometimes) and forgiving towards fellow golfers.

26. Help pick up flight mates' clubs, puttter covers in preparation to leave the green quickly.

27. Keep a look out for errant/stray balls from adjacent/ nearby tee-boxes.

28. After holing out, don't sit in buggy to record scores on score-card - record at next tee-box.

29. Park buggy at designated parking areas.
