| A question.
When is the right time for a person to buy his/her personal irons?
My iron set is a hand me down from 1 of my clients. He is the one who motivate and push me into this love/hate game.
Is it to early for me ? Do I need to ?
Where is a good shop where I can test many of the well known irons?
What I have in mind is to buy the iron head and go to a club fitter to fit me. But so far, there is none who sell only the iron head. :-(
thanks in advance ! | |

| Bro_edi, most golfers will go through some stages of golfers process. From beginner to high handicappers, high to mid and mid to low.
You may require different type of iron sets at different stages; 1. beginner to high hcp - get a super forgiving set (cavity type) 2. High to mid - get a intermediate set(combo) 3. Mid to low - optional to get a precision type(blade) or stay with intermediate set
When your ball striking is in-consistence, getting a blade set may make your game worst. Getting a cavity type will improve your game faster.
Ping is a good choice as they custom fit for all stages. If you have budget, you can consider those off the rack.
Just my 2 cents, Cheers.

| For me, I played with my Dad's hand me down clubs for afew years. My first hand me down was the most frustrating period.. They were blades. Then I learned that blades arent meant for beginners.. but my dad clubs are all blades... The next set was a cavity.. brand new hand me down bcos an 'Uncle' didn't like it, my dad got that for me.. Played that for a few yrs, got a better feel... THen 2 yrs back, I got my own brand new set after shopping around, research internet and trying out various clubs... I think the first set of clubs that you pick up yr golf is the most impt. It should make you feel the most comfortable and confident. Thats why I asked the abv qns... I thought if one gets a fitted club he is most comfortable at the onset, it may help him/her develop their game better... just my 1.5 cents worth.... | |

| I am comfortable with my current swing. I have adopted a neutral grip as per advised by my RDG kakis and it really works fine for me. I am able to control my irons and wedges now. So far so good. | |

Butch Harmon or Hank Haney ... I agreed with bro Lam...except the top coach part ! Focus on your game and you will see your improvement with your current irons set. After a year or two when you score is consistent than upgrade to a Ping blade sets so to shape your shots. Don't jump in when you see someone new irons or new irons launch in the market, you get a new irons when you are ready for your next Big Leap Of Faith......i am still using my beginner KingCobra sets after 4 years...still loving it ! Just my 2cent worth ! UL

| "When is the right time for a person to buy his/her personal irons?"
IMHO: when u have money to spend, then its the right time, cos money is to be spent, not to be saved, one wont know the true value of money until one BUY something.....
but to spend it wisely.....hmmmmm
anyway, going back to the questions:
"Is it to early for me ?" how long have u been playing, and whats your score like?
"Do I need to ?" what dun u like about your current irons?

| Fitted irons allow you to enjoy the game more, because everything is customized to your body height, weight, strength, etc. It's equivalent to a tailor made tuxedo (no pun intended).
Having said that, it is also important to gauge your desire for the game. If you intend to just play once a year, then forget about customized clubs. However, if you intend to be a little bit more serious about your game (which I think you are!), customized clubs are the way to go.
I always tell people to have clubs that are slightly harder to hit because they "force" you to train harder and be less complacent. I had cavity backs when I started out and got complacent because no matter how I topped the ball, the ball seems to run far. Blades brought me back down to earth and got me to work really hard on my game and reminds me not to get complacent.
Well, that's for me. My 2 cents. Cheers and good luck with your Cobra S9-1 sale. A 9 degree driver ain't suit the Rock's taste. Thanks, bro Edi.

| Bro edi,
Sorry. I re-read your post and topic heading and I realised the answer to the question:
When to purchase Irons ?
Answer: "When there is a good sale!"
Cheers! | |

thanks in advance ! You can order iron heads online from golfsmith or golfworks - both reputable. Then you can drop by a local clubfitter for a fitting.

Iron Heads bought on-line may not be the correct lie angle for you. To custom fit your personal irons, the lie angle and shaft flex is very important. Getting the wrong lie angle and fit into a normal regular shaft is no difference of buying off the rack. If you understand what I meant.
