During a match play on a wet day on the golf course. SaltyDog ball was on the fairway after a 230m drive. As he threaded on the fairway, he can feel that the grass is very wet, soggy and like he is standing in a pool of water. SD than told Uncle Lau saying his ball is in casual water, SD lift the ball and moved backward to a drier fairway and proceed his 2nd shot.

Is Saltydog playing by the book or will Uncle Lau be penaltise for not informing SD of any infringement ???

Answer: No. SD should play as it lies.

Free re-lift.... No penalty. Indeed is causal water.

In the 1st place if the course is wet, why the club still open to its members and guest ???

For everyone's benefit......

We have to understand the meaning of "casual water'....which is any temporary accumulation of water on the course that is not a water hazard, and is visible before or after the player takes his stance. Soft and mushy ground is NOT casual water.

In this incident, SD's ball is NOT in casual water, and should play as it lies.

What followed could be serious....

By lifting the ball, SD has iinfringed Rule 18-2 (ball moved by player) and it's 1 stroke penalty and he must replace the ball.

Since he played from other part of the fairway, that's infringement of Rule 20-7 (playing from wrong place), and it's 2 strokes penalty.

So SD incurred total of 3 strokes.....but since this is match play, SD lost the hole.
