QUESTION:
Sarah's ball lies on the grass on the lip of a bunker, but she has to take her stance in the bunker. Without thinking she grounds her club lightly in the sand as she addresses her ball. What is the ruling?

The rules say you cannot ground club when the ball is in hazard. Since her ball is not in hazard, there is no penalty.

Back to fundamentals.....
A sentence in the definition of bunkers clearly states that " a ball is in a bunker when it lies in or any part of it touches the bunker".

In this case, if the ball touches the sand, then it is in the bunker Very Happy

This is probably same as the episode where Dustin Johnson has in PGA where he walk into a bunker that has been stepped on and without knowing that it is a bunker. Hence incurring 2 stroke penalty.

ANSWER:

Sarah has not incurred any penalty. Decision 13-4/1.

You are permitted to ground your club in a hazard if your ball lies outside the hazard.
